Abstract

This essay analyzes how theatre and ballet function as pedagogical mediations capable of fostering the intercultural integration of Venezuelan migrant students at IED Mundo Bolivariano in Barranquilla. First, the paper recognizes Venezuelan migration as one of the most significant phenomena of forced human mobility in recent Latin American history and examines the implications of this process for the school as a space of reception, coexistence, and formation. The literature review focuses on themes such as migration, inclusion, social prejudice, school belonging, and arts-based pedagogies. This review argues that performing arts practices such as theatre and ballet should be understood as pedagogical devices capable of promoting students’ self-recognition, cultural exchange, socio-affective bonds, and, as a result, school retention. This argument is supported, first, by the fact that theatre and ballet encourage the recognition of Venezuelan migrant students as subjects of cultural value; second, these practices strengthen both their sense of belonging and their adaptation to the new school environment; and third, their impact expands when these spaces for artistic formation and exploration are articulated with the institutional educational project and school coexistence processes. The essay concludes that, in order to achieve the integration of migrant student, the performing arts constitute a relevant pathway through which inclusion, interculturality, and attachment to the educational community can be fostered.
