Family Support During the COVID-19: Academic Performance of Secondary School Students
Main Article Content
Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic caused significant changes in the educational system, forcing students to adapt to virtual learning modalities. In this context, family support became a fundamental factor in strengthening students’ academic performance, motivation, and school discipline. This study analyzes the influence of family support on secondary school students, highlighting the importance of the active participation of parents and guardians in the educational process. The research was conducted using a mixed qualitative–quantitative descriptive approach, employing interviews and surveys administered to students and parents. The population consisted of eighth-grade students and their parents, with a sample of 80
students and 80 parents. Data analysis was carried out using statistical tools such as SPSS and Microsoft Excel to interpret the information collected on family support and academic performance. The findings revealed that family support significantly influenced students’ academic achievement during the pandemic. Students who received assistance with homework, supervision of virtual classes, and continuous communication with their parents demonstrated higher motivation and better academic performance. Additionally, challenges related to digital access, inadequate study habits, and limited family participation in some households were identified. The study concludes that family support played an essential role in the educational process of secondary school students during the COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to improved academic performance and emotional well-being. The results suggest that active family involvement, together with school support strategies and effective communication, promotes learning in times of crisis. Therefore, it is recommended that educational institutions continue implementing family guidance and support programs to strengthen student learning outcomes.
