Abstract

This assay presents an analysis of some recent doctoral thesis research and scientific articles on strengthening reading comprehension, especially critical reading, in different contexts and levels of schooling. A total of 36 works were analyzed, distributed among international, national and local references, mainly according to their objectives, type of research, context and findings. The above is a preamble to then analyze each of the postulates that Miguel de Zubiría, along with other authors, have called: Model of the Optimal Reader or Theory of the Six Readings. This theory is based on the following processes: First and Second Affective Reading, basic and advanced cognitive reading, finally pre-categorical reading and metatextual reading as the final level that leads the student to read critically.

Therefore, the main objective of this work is to establish a documentary base that can be used for a later construction of didactic strategies in favor of strengthening critical reading skills. It was concluded that the aforementioned Theory of the Six Readings, devotes special interest to building an affection towards the act of reading, therefore seeking to promote and scrutinize the interests, motivations and objectives that each learner may have in order to achieve the purpose of forming truly critical readers. Thus, this model of reader leaves the doors open for teachers and/or trainers of critical reading, to contextualize their postulates to the needs of the communities of schoolchildren and, therefore, to make the most of each process.
