Abstract

The pedagogical guidelines for the area of Physical Education in Colombia are aimed at ensuring that this knowledge contributes to the comprehensive development of students, given that, currently, the challenges of the surrounding reality require schools to train individuals who possess both cognitive skills and socio-emotional competencies. For this reason, this doctoral thesis research intends to analyze the state of the art related to the development of socio-emotional competencies from the area of physical education, the implementation of actions to achieve such development, and the relationships that these competencies have with the environment and school coexistence. To achieve this, a documentary review was conducted focusing on the search for studies related to the aforementioned topics. In this process, various databases, repositories from universities with accredited postgraduate programs in the field of Human Sciences, and articles in specialized journals produced from research in education were reviewed. As a result of this literature review, this article presents findings from six selected studies that significantly contribute to recognizing the state of the art regarding the development of socio-emotional competencies and the school environment through Physical Education. These studies demonstrate some implemented strategies that generated development in empathy, conflict resolution, or self-esteem, also showing a positive influence on improving the environment and school coexistence.
